Catamaran Tribe in the Caribbean

Grenada is an interesting place to see but a conflicted island. Lush and beautiful, yet it does not have a warm and fuzzy feeling like some places when you are walking about. At Prickly Bay, houses are surrounded by enormous walls with enormous dogs behind them. Next to the big homes is a vast area of squatters with large extended families in little wooden shacks. I noticed one boy running, then the road was filled with kids running. Every Friday, all the school children join for a huge race; mass confusion of kids running, walking, dodging taxis and bikes.

Our taxi driver, Martin, drove us into the mountains to show us a spice plantation and the rain forest. There are nutmeg and cinnamon trees everywhere. Martin eats cinnamon bark and rubs nutmeg on his face before going out on the town. He is known as “spice man”

The spice market in downtown St.Georges is one of the coolest places on the island. India and I spent hours wandering around Market Square which is filled with beautifully faded red and yellow French architecture.

We then headed back up through the French Islands, some of our favorites: Martinique, Les Saintes, and Guadeloupe. These islands have all the charm and beauty of the small towns in Brittany and Normandy in a tropical setting, with excellent, cheap food. Great opportunity to brush up your French!

We just arrived in Antigua and heard the sad, sad news of the fire in Rhode Island.
